Our Library’s History

The first meeting of the new Blind River Library Association was held on January 18, 1926.

The library was open for only a few hours each month. Mrs. Marie K. Burd was hired in March, 1926 and was paid $8.00 per month.

Membership fees were .05 per child and .10 per adult. Books were added to the collection with funds raised at events such as card parties, box socials, bake sales, amateur plays and movie nights. Prominent residents also donated specific titles.

In 1964, a Town By-Law changed the status of the Library to a Public Library with all privileges and obligations under the Public Libraries Act.

The Library moved its physical location through the years from a room in the basement of the old Town Hall and the original St. Joseph’s Hospital. In 1941, the Library moved to its first permanent home at 17 Michigan Avenue. The Library Association rented a public school annex (known today as a portable) for $1.00 annually. The building was purchased by the Library Association in 1949. A fundraising project for Canada’s Centennial Year built an addition in the early 1970’s that doubled the size of the building.

The challenges facing the Library in the 21^st Century were recognized in 1999 by the Town of Blind River. A town owned and historically significant building was designated as the new library. The building, at one time or another, had been home to the Post Office, Town Hall, Courthouse, Jail, Customs Office, Public Health Unit and a Separate School Board office. Ontario Heritage funds were obtained to renovate our present home at 8 Woodward Avenue. The Library opened for business in this location in July 2000.

En 1964, un arrêté municipal a modifié le statut de la bibliothèque pour en faire une bibliothèque publique avec tous les privilèges et obligations prévus par la Loi sur les Bibliothèques Publiques.

La bibliothèque a changé d’emplacement au fil des ans, passant d’une pièce au sous-sol de l’ancien hôtel de ville et de l’ancien hôpital St. Joseph. En 1941, la bibliothèque s’installe dans ses premiers locaux permanents au 17 Michigan Avenue. L’association de la bibliothèque louait une annexe d’école publique (connue aujourd’hui sous le nom de portable) pour 1 $ par an. Le bâtiment a été acheté par la Association de la Bibliothèque de Blind River en 1949. Un projet de collecte de fonds pour l’année du centenaire du Canada a permis de construire une annexe au début des années 1970 qui a doublé la taille de l’édifice.

Les défis auxquels la bibliothèque doit faire face au 21e siècle ont été reconnus en 1999 par la ville de Blind River. Un bâtiment appartenant à la ville et présentant un intérêt historique a été désigné comme nouvelle bibliothèque. L’immeuble a abrité, à un moment ou à un autre, le bureau de poste, l’hôtel de ville, le palais de justice, la prison, le bureau de douane, le service de santé publique et le bureau du conseil scolaire séparé. Des fonds du Patrimoine Ontarien ont été obtenus pour rénover notre maison actuelle au 8, avenue Woodward. La bibliothèque a ouvert ses portes à cet endroit en juillet 2000.
